Trust-Based Selling: Key Lessons from Ari Galper
Profit and Proof Podcast | Hosted by Joie Roberts
Everyone in sales talks about “building trust.” But according to Ari Galper, author, trust-based selling authority, and creator of the One Call Sale method trust doesn’t exist without truth. In this episode of the Profit and Proof Podcast, Ari sits down with host Joey Roberts to break down why most sales conversations fail to get to the truth, and what to do instead.
Ari has spent over 20 years helping companies replace long, drawn-out sales cycles with a single, trust-first conversation. In this episode, he shares the exact language, scripts, and mindset shifts his clients use to get prospects to open up including the story of the muted phone call that changed the direction of his entire career.
Key Takeaways
- Stop selling solutions. Start selling understanding. Most companies pitch their product before they understand the prospect’s real problem which puts the buyer’s guard up.
- Replace the “discovery call” with a “trust meeting.” A discovery call is a qualification exercise. A trust meeting is where you actually earn the right to hear the truth.
- Silence builds trust faster than talking does. Ari’s signature move literally putting your fingers over your mouth is a physical reminder to stop talking and let the prospect talk.
- Ditch ROI. Use Cost of Inaction (COI) instead. Buyers can’t think five years out, but they can feel the cost of not solving the problem right now.
- The first meeting isn’t for closing, it’s for onboarding. The goal of your first conversation is simply to earn a second one, using a “roadmap” instead of a pitch.
- Retire the word “follow up” forever. Ari argues it signals you’re chasing the sale. Replace it with “feedback,” which keeps the conversation on the prospect’s problem, not your solution.
Why Solution-Selling Breaks Trust
Ari explains that most companies operate from a solution-based mindset pitching, over-explaining, and doing free consulting to convince someone to buy. The problem: prospects can feel it. The moment a conversation shifts into pitch mode, buyers put their guard up because they know the game.
The fix is a problem-centric approach: instead of leading with what you sell, lead with the issues you solve. When a prospect feels understood rather than sold to, that’s when trust and the truth starts to surface.
“When someone feels understood by somebody else, that’s what trust is.” Ari Galper
The Trust Meeting vs. the Discovery Call
Traditional sales processes start with a discovery call, a qualification exercise designed to size up the prospect before moving them to a demo. Ari’s take: that’s not trust-building, it’s data collection.
His alternative is what he calls a trust meeting: a deep dive into the prospect’s world that unpacks their real issues before any mention of your product. Ask a few surface-level qualifying questions too early, Ari warns, and prospects will only give “service-level” answers, just enough to sound interested, without the deeper truth that actually moves a deal forward.
How to Build Trust in the First 30 Minutes
Ari walks through the exact script his clients use to open a first meeting:
- Skip the small talk and rapport-building entirely.
- Ask permission: “If it’s okay with you, walk me through your background and situation, up to your current issues. Would that be okay?”
- Physically stop talking – Ari coaches clients to sit back and put their fingers over their mouth as a reminder.
- Summarize what you heard: “So what I’m hearing is your core challenges are X, Y, and Z – is that right?”
- Ask how long the issue has existed, and what they’ve already tried to fix.
The goal of the first meeting isn’t to pitch – it’s to earn a second meeting, in 30 minutes or less. Go longer, Ari says, and you slip into “free consulting mode,” overloading the prospect with information instead of building trust.
Replace ROI With Cost of Inaction (COI)
According to Ari, most reps lose prospects by pitching long-term ROI (“we can save you $X over five years”). The problem: people can’t think that far ahead. Instead, he coaches reps to ask about the cost of inaction and what the problem is costing the business right now by not being solved.
The final, most important question in Ari’s framework: “Is this a priority for you to resolve once and for all and I’m okay either way.” Detaching from the outcome, he says, is what allows the prospect to actually own the decision instead of feeling sold.
The Roadmap: Onboarding, Not Closing
Once a prospect confirms the problem is a priority, Ari’s method shifts to a roadmap: a simple, visual, phase-by-phase outline of how you’ll work with them (discovery, analysis, planning, etc.), not a pitch for your product. He also flags one phrase to eliminate from every sales conversation: “Do you have any questions?” replace it with “What are your thoughts on the roadmap?” and “Where would you like to go from here?”
Retire the Word “Follow Up”
Ari’s closing challenge to every sales and marketing team: stop using the phrase “follow up” permanently. It signals to the prospect that they’re being chased toward a sale. His replacement: ask for feedback on the previous conversation, proposal, or meeting instead of language that keeps the focus on their problem, not your close.
Ari’s Origin Story: The Call That Changed Everything
Ari shares the moment that shaped his entire philosophy. Early in his career, running a high-tech sales team, he led what felt like a perfect live demo call with a major enterprise prospect, multiple decision-makers on the line, great energy, no objections. As the call ended, he accidentally hit mute instead of hanging up and overheard the prospect’s real conversation: they had no intention of buying from him, and planned to use him for information while shopping elsewhere for a cheaper option.
That moment being liked, but not trusted enough to be told the truth became the foundation for everything Ari has taught for the past two decades.
